Turning real-time data into Information part 2 Interview with Tony Edwards by Oil and Gas Engineering

Tony Edwards, CEO of StepChange Global, discussed with Oil and Gas Engineering how the digital oilfield can have a direct impact on production success, and we look at how to equip operators with the tools they need. Courtesy: Tony Edwards, StepChange GlobGetting real-time data from the oil field or pipeline to the people who need to act on that data has always been a challenge in the industry. Today, new technologies and new strategies are making it easier to collect and analyze data, but the oil and gas industry has been slow to adopt these systems. In the second of a two-part series, Oil & Gas Engineering spoke with Tony Edwards, CEO of StepChange Global, a U.K.-based digital oilfield advisory and consultancy company focused on designing and delivering integrated operations services, about how the oil and gas industry is taking full advantage of a new way of working, and the effect it has on reducing costs increasing efficiency. The promise of increased efficiency through automation is proving difficult to implement for oil and gas companies, as they seek to use the massive amounts of data being collected to optimize processes, improve asset management and increase production. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) promises only more data and machine to machine communications, what do oil and gas engineers need to do now to evaluate the opportunities presented by technology over the next 2-5 years? This webcast will illuminate the challenges of implementing automation, help identify which parts of the operation to focus on, and strategies for making the data collected actionable across the entire operation.Webcast attendees will:

  • Learn how to assess where automation can be applied with the greatest effect in their organization
  • Understand the business and personnel-related challenges involved in implementing automation and IIoT technology
  • Hear about case studies and data integration strategies being implemented at major oil and gas companies in production environments

Emerson and StepChange Global collaborate to help oil and gas producers improve production efficiency

Strategic consulting improves operational performance with information solutions and organisational change management

Emerson and StepChange Global have combined their technology and consulting expertise to help producers increase production and cut operational costs by developing, implementing, and evolving best practices with Integrated Operations (iOps) and Digital Oilfield. An effective iOps solution helps users improve profitability through better access to real-time data and information, innovative technology, and its integration into a collaborative organisation.

Emerson’s technology and StepChange Global’s consultants help improve collaboration between the operational site and the support teams in the office in order to maximise the value that can be gained from operating asset information. With iOps, an enterprise can then build confidence in its information and trust among extended teams to implement improvements that include improving operator efficiency and optimising its core operational processes.
By optimising production using iOps tools and techniques, an oilfield can see production efficiency improvements of up to two percent. A closed-loop gas lift application can see production improvements of five percent. Previous iOps implementations have seen OPEX reductions of five to 20 percent with payback in less than a year.
“The oilfield major players see Integrated Operations as a transformational programme to optimise their business performance, and is the way they will work in the future,” said Tony Edwards, StepChange Global CEO. “Performance optimisation is required as the industry struggles with falling oil prices, key skill shortages, and risk reduction and compliance requirements for both Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) and production.”
“Working with StepChange helps us drive increased production efficiency for our customers,” said Jerry Brown, senior vice-president of Emerson’s industry solutions. “We are reducing operations and maintenance OPEX costs by improving visibility of real-time actionable asset information across multiple remote sites and oilfields.”
