25 Years since the CERA report kicked off the concept of the Digital Oilfield – What have we learned and what does the future look like?Tony Edwards will be leading a session in the Digital Transformation Theatre at the EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition, to be held in Aberdeen, 8-11 June 2026.

The session is entitled:

25 Years since the CERA report kicked off the concept of the Digital Oilfield – What have we learned and what does the future look like?

It is now nearly 25 years since CERA coined the term Digital OilField of the Future (DOFF) which was the launchpad for the first wave of Digital Transformation initiatives in companies such as Statoil (Equinor), BP, Shell, Chevron and Aramco. So, what have we learnt over this period and perhaps more importantly what have we forgotten? What was the original digital vision for our operations and assets and what did we deliver against that vision?

Looking forward, what will the latest and greatest technologies such as AI and digital twin do to transform the vision into reality? If we apply all that we have learned in the application of advanced digital technologies to our brownfield assets to new greenfield projects, what would they look like? Unmanned, autonomous, remotely controlled? And will this finally deliver the original vision we had at the start of the digital journey in the early mid 2000’s?
